The
Mustel
Group's June poll puts the NDP and BC Liberals only
5 points apart compared to the May Ipsos-Reid poll which
had the parties 16 points apart
The
Mustel Group's poll puts the NDP and Liberals in a competitive
race - within the poll's sampling error. The libs dropped
6 points to register at 41% while the NDP gained 5 points
to register at 36%. The Mustel Group has consistently shown
the Green Party support lower than is shown in polling by
Ipsos-Reid. For June, the Mustel Group put the Greens at
10% (an increase of 2%) while the May Ipsos-Reid poll put
the Greens at 18%. Of course, many consider the number for
the Greens as nothing more than "none-of-the-above",
a category that will likely change in favour of the NDP
once the election draws near.
When
Evi Mustel was interviewed she said that the BC Liberals
dropped most in the Interior. The poll was taken too close
to the resignation of Joy MacPail to register the effect
of her departure - she made her announcement on June 3rd
and the poll was conducted June 5-12. Mustel credited the
shift to a loss of support for the BC Liberals in the Interior,
no doubt related to their disastrous handling of the Coquihalla
Highway.
Unless
Ipsos-Reid does a special poll, their next offering isn't
due until the end of August. The Mustel Group poll may encourage
potential NDP leadership candidates to come forth and start
a full-fledged campaign.
