Public
Funding, Private Political Benefit
Check
out the Alberta and Ontario provincial websites as well
as the sites for those governing parties. Ralph Klein
and Mike Harris have the common sense not to use public
resources on communications that clearly belong to their
political party.
The
Campbell folks seem to have the same problem in government
that they suffered in opposition. The Auditor General
confirmed (pdf)
that the Liberals used public funds in 1997 for a mailing
costing almost a million dollars that should have been
paid for by their party. In government they have now
posted distorted, partisan propaganda on the government
website. If the cost is anything like the $100,000 plus
spent on the Waste Busters, they ought to look at repaying
the public purse from party funds.
Promises
made, promises twisted would be a more accurate description
of their first 100 days. Inaccuracies aside, it is not
the business of government to publish websites that
detail a political platform, let alone propagandize
about whether or not that platform was delivered.
