Constituencies
or Electoral Areas?
British
Columbia's Electoral Boundary Commission was asked to draft
both new single member constituencies for our current electoral
system and boundaries for BC-STV that would be used in 2013
if the referendum passes. The Commission drew BC-STV boundaries
as combinations of the single member constituencies; it
did't break any of the single member constituencies into
pieces to be distributed between two or more BC-STV electoral
areas. That makes it possible to look at which of the 85
single MLA constituencies would be merged so as to form
each of the 20 multiple-MLA electoral areas for BC-STV.
With
our current system you get one vote and you elect one MLA.
With BC-STV you still get one vote but between two and seven
MLAs would be elected depending on the electoral area where
you live. The numbers or rankings that are marked on each
ballot are not separate votes but are instructions to be
used in the complicated counting system.
Maps
for the single MLA constituencies to be used for the 2009
election are available on the Elections
BC website as are maps for the multiple-MLA constituencies
that would be used with BC-STV.
